History of Travertine
The history of travertine has its roots in ancient Rome, where it has become the protagonist of many monumental buildings that have become true icons of Roman architecture, such as the Flavian amphitheater, also known as the Colosseum, and the Teatro Marcello.
A material that has always been precious and selected for timeless works even later: we also find it in the entire colonnade of St. Peter's Square, in Rome, chosen by Bernini for its elegance and durability.
We discover travertine also among the most loved materials of the 900, where we see, in the Fascist period in particular the expansion of the Palazzo di Montecitorio in Rome, the facade of the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Assisi and the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in San Giovanni Rotondo, the Manifattura Tabacchi and the Teatro Puccini in Florence, the Palazzo delle Nazioni in Geneva, the Palazzo della Borsa and the Central Station in Milan, the colonnades for a railway station never built in Berlin.
And it is precisely the growing demand in the fascist period that contributes to the development of the Tuscan quarries, giving rise to a real Rapolano stone district, organized into family businesses or cooperative workers ' societies, and engaged in the supply of travertines for important buildings in Italy and abroad.
A material in continuous growth up to the present day, where it is conquering contemporary interior design: from the Barcelona Pavilion of Lud .Ig Mies van der Rohe to the increasingly frequent use in interiors, from the bathroom to the living room, or in furniture design: no other material is as fresh and at the same time sophisticated as this stone in calcium carbonate that, over the centuries, spring waters deposit by precipitation.
Between an ancient and glorious past and a future as a protagonist of design, travertine is confirmed as the true and pulsating soul of the architecture of every era. And Lapis Vitae proudly bears witness to this throughout the world.
